The First Term is Closing and Christmas is approaching!

As the term comes to a close and we all get excited to get home, eat to much and drink ourselves merry, let’s have a look back at the amazing time the hiking club has had.

The semester started strong with give it a go and Try It! Walks as well as our Greenwich and pub quiz socials open to all students and ending with the spectacular Seven Sisters hike. These obviously managed to attract many people to the club as membership now totals over 299.

Since then our weekly walks have always managed to attract good numbers and (apart from having to make a retreat inland when met by gale-force winds at Dover) have all gone smoothly. We also had some amazing socials to help bring the club together consisting of a board games night and a Halloween movie night watching "The Cabin in the Woods".

Our residential trip into the heart of the Brecon Beacons, away from any phone reception or internet may not have had perfect clear views but was still enjoyed by all, with participants rating the trip an average of 9/10. The trip pushed many to their physical edge as we hiked over hills, sprung over rivers and marched down roman roads all to make it back for sunset. Hot drinks, cooked dinners, games, and one night even a bonfire and fireworks could be enjoyed in the evenings.

Other events have also been immensely successful. Our EGM filled up all committee posts as well as filling all attendees with pizza. Female members pushed themselves to walk over 30km along the Thames from Hampton Court into London for UCL's “This Girl Can” week. Finally we celebrated the club's 10th year anniversary with a club night, a bar night and a walk each with their own stories to tell.

Looking forwards we have lots of events to get you in the Christmas spirit, including a hike ending at a Christmas market, our club Christmas dinner, a Christmas movie night, and a walk through London’s Christmas markets and lights. We also have a hike in cooperation with the Students' Union's Project Active to Windsor Castle.

Thank you all for an amazing term for the club and we hope to see you all at our Christmas events and at the multitude of hikes and social events that will be available next semester.

Happy holidays, and happy new year!

With lots of love,

Hiking Club Committee
